When you are in the process of replacing your garage door, taking the right measurements is super important. Most garage doors require a fixing sub frame of some description- that has to be taken in to consideration with the measurements. Also manufacturers size references can vary from one to another to insure that replacement parts are bought from them only.
Different garage door brands use different criteria to specify the order, price and the overall door. When you are in the market looking for a new garage door Most sectional garage doors are installed behind (inside) the garage opening to maximize drive through dimensions and most have quite large space requirements for the frame legs and the height required for the curved part of the track the door panels move in. However because a sectional garage door does not go through the opening it is possible to install sizes larger and smaller than your actual opening on the width and height. Very rarely will a standard size sectional door be the exact size when replacing an old door.
If you are looking in to replacing your garage door and not sure where to start here are some important instruction to measure your door to be able to determine the size of the door.
Step 1- You will first measure the width of the opening at the widest point. This is the distance between the right and left sides of the finished opening. For best results, the inside of the garage door opening should be framed with 2″ x 6″ wood. Look for general irregularities, such as jambs which are not square.
Step 2- Measure the height of the opening at the highest point. This is the distance between the floor and the top of the finished opening. Look for general irregularities, such as un-level floor.
Step 3- Measure the width of the areas beside the openings. Up to 3.75″ is required on each side for installation of the vertical track. If this is a double car garage door installation, center post should be a min. of 10″ wide.
Step 4- Measure the area between the top of the door opening and the ceiling (or to the lowest obstruction at ceiling). See headroom requirements on the “Step 2 – Installation Options” page when getting a garage door quoted on-line.
Step 5- Measure the distance from the opening to the rear of the garage or nearest obstruction. For sectional type doors, the backroom requirement is the door height plus an additional 18″ for manual lift doors. If an electric opener is to be installed, the door’s backroom requirement is the door height plus an additional 4’2″.
Be more knowledgeable- there are curtain sizes that are considered standard sizes and those are usually easier to find right away. most companies would carry them and they would be the cheapest way to go.
standard sizes are 8′x7′ for a single car garage door and 16′x7′ for a double car garage door.
